Which is better for me? Nylon or polyester carpet fibers?
The answer to that question depends upon how you plan to use your carpeting. Of course, they are both excellent choices, but your requirements, surroundings, and finances will help you decide best.
Before you decide
Ask yourself about both your lifestyle and the room in which the floor covering is to be installed. For instance, do you have a large family with kids and pets, or is it small and quiet?
How will the room be used; a living room can be the center of family activity where people gather to watch TV, play games, and sometimes eat, or it can be a room only used for entertaining guests. A bedroom could be just a place for sleeping or include a treadmill or home office. This thought process should be done before you even walk into the carpet store.
Nylon: super strength, good resistance to stains
Nylon is the most popular synthetic carpet fiber, accounting for over 50% of all residential rugs. It's durable enough to stand up to the most wear and tear and has good resiliency (bouncing back into shape after compression, such as footsteps).
Nylon is also resistant to crushing (when the fibers become matted, flat, and lose resiliency), is static-free, mold and mildew resistant, easy to care for, and versatile enough to be in many styles. It can be slightly more expensive than other synthetics but will stand up to the heaviest foot traffic.
About polyester
Some polyester carpet fibers are made from recycled items, such as plastic water bottles; this gives the fiber more strength and makes it an eco-friendly option.
Polyester carpet fiber is better for moderate levels of foot traffic since it is less resistant to crushing. It is, however, hydrophobic (which means it doesn't absorb), so it has excellent inherent stain resistance and is also mold/mildew resistant.
